The Right Stuff!

I often get asked the question,
"How do I choose the right products for my hair?
Well you don't have to go into it blindly...

I'm always in search of the best products. It's something
akin to searching for the holy grail. But, a lot more fun!
I get a happy feeling all over just thinking of spending time
strolling the aisles of a beauty supply...
(insert Wayne's World dream sequence music here)
trying all the products, marveling at how shiny my hair looks
after applying that new serum, experiencing aromatherapy
as I deeply inhale all the scents surrounding me......
Okay, I'm back.

There are so many hair products out there that
it can be confusing figuring out what's best for you.
To make things simpler, here are some
tried and true rules for every type of hair:

1. Buy your products from a licensed professional.
There really is a difference in quality and results with

2. Buy products with a ph of 4.5 - 5.5.
This is the ph of healthy hair and skin. Chemicals, the
environment and even your water have a ph from 9 - 15.
To counteract that, you want to use products that
maintain or achieve a healthy ph (also referred to
as the acid mantle - which protects the hair and skin).
If a product doesn't have the ph right on the bottle or
the professional that you are buying from doesn't know
the ph, it probably doesn't have the proper balance.

3. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Once you find a product that works, stick with it.
If I had a nickle (okay, maybe $5.00) for every time
one of my new clients said, "I have to switch
shampoo & conditioner regularly because
my hair gets used to it", I'd be a wealthy woman.
You hair doesn't have a mind. So if you are using products
that are cleansing without stripping, conditioning without
heavy waxes and synthetics and are properly
ph balanced you don't have to change.

Once you've determined that the product is well balanced,
the rest is a personal decision. Does this fit in to my budget?
Do I love the way it smells? Have fun! Enjoy!

Curly Hair...
follow my tried and true rules. But here's a Little Secret:
Because curly hair is, well curly, it doesn' t reflect the light
the way straight hair does. So it very often looks "dry".
A common mistake that people (including some hairstylists)
make is using heavy moisturizing products. This just adds
to the problem by plumping the hair and adding to the frizzies.
Those of you with curly hair know the fear of getting
caught in the rain or being invited to a pool party without
guaranteed privacy when exiting the pool. So if your
hair isn't dry, why would you intentionally add
moisture/water to it? Simply use a regular formula,
well balanced shampoo & conditioner. Shine Serums
are a great way to get light reflection. Just be careful
to use a lightweight one to maintain curl definition.

I hope that answers your questions and you can
be sure that I will continue to share any
new discoveries I make along my "quest".

Here's to great hair days everyday!

PS. How often do you suggest that I (and others) get their hair cut?
