Recently I was reminded of how exciting the 60's were

for hair. To properly cover the variety of hairstyles and the

impact that time has had on Modern Hair, I've decided to

do a series on the era. I'd like to begin with...

It may seem odd that this first installment of my

60's Hair Series is on another hairstylist. But a look

back at that era in Hair History would not be complete

without mentioning a man who was without question,

one of the most influential hairstylist of the 60's.

The 5 Point Cut that Sassoon created in 1965

was a signature take on the Bob and the one responsible

for putting him on the hairdressing map in a Big way!

It's sharp lines, precision and architectural details were

in sharp contrast to his next creation...

But no matter what the Look...

Vidal Sassoon, "The Father of Modern Hair"...

not only influenced hair in the 60's, he continues to

influence and inspire hairstylists (myself included) today.

I Loves Me Some Long Hair Guys!

As I have mentioned in the past, I have a fondness

for Guys with Long Hair. It's definitely a carry over...

from my "younger days". But let me be clear, I still think

that it needs to be healthy, shaped properly and appropriate

for the individual. Here's some of my favorites...

Guys that Rock Long Hair...

This is a perfect example of keeping long hair healthy.

Whew, it needed this trim! Not that I'm opposed to

the length in the first picture. But the ends were

looking really "Scraggly" (a technical term for unhealthy)!

and now...

Hmm...it looks VERY similar.

There are some exceptions to my love of long

hair. For example...

I can appreciate (maybe appreciate is too

strong a word) but this just creeps me out!

A Buzz Cut can be a great look for guys as well as

as I like to quote, "The devil is in the details". A good stylist

sculpts an individual's haircut based on their features, age, hair

I just completed a 2 day Educator Training for ThermaFuse which is one of the product lines that I carry. It was intense but great! One of my readers recently sent me an

article from Esquire Magazine entitled

'How to Pick a Haircut' by Rodney Cutler.

I agree with the article's suggestion that your
hairstyle should be a reflection of your lifestyle.
But, I think there are other things to consider
when choosing the right hairstyle. For example,
your hair's texture, facial features and your age.
(Yes, I do believe there are some hairstyles
that are not appropriate for any age)

A good hairstylist is able to guide you in
determining what hairstyle is best suited for you
and is skilled enough to give you any haircut
regardless of the style. That's why I disagree with
the article's suggestion that you should choose
your hairstylist based on the hairstyle you want.
No matter what the cut (including clipper), there is
no comparison between a haircut given by a
good hairstylist and a mediocre hairstylist!
Just ask any of my clients!
